From Typical Manager 5.2 onwards, Relationship Attributes with a Source Attribute work differently. This article explains the change and what happens to your existing data.
This change is somewhat technical, but understanding it helps you recognize what happens in your Projects after the migration.
How it worked before (previous version) When you established an Attribute Relationship in the Library, the Attribute values in Projects were visually cleared so that the new Relationship-value could be entered. You could specify one Attribute as the "Source" Attribute within the Relationship.
- With a Source Attribute set: all other Attributes in the Relationship became read-only. The value could only be manipulated through the Source Attribute.
- Without a Source Attribute: every Attribute in the Relationship could manipulate the value.
How it works from Typical Manager 5.2 onwards When a Source Attribute is set, the actual value of the Source Attribute is used and displayed directly. The Relationship no longer has or uses a separate "Relationship-value".
- The other Attributes in the Relationship remain read-only.
- The value can still only be manipulated via the Source Attribute.
- Any manipulation now changes the actual value of the Source Attribute (because that is the value being used).
What happens to your data during the update During the update procedure, the existing Relationship-values are copied into the Source Attributes. This means:
- The values your end-users see do not change after the migration.
- A previously hidden Source Attribute value will not suddenly become visible; the Relationship-value is used instead.
This prevents the situation where a former hidden Attribute source value would unexpectedly replace the Relationship-value that users were familiar with.
What to check after the migration
- Spot-check a few Projects that use Attribute Relationships with a Source Attribute.
- Confirm that the values displayed to your users match what they saw before the migration.
